These instructions will help you create your own RAC search in PubMed on a topic of your choice. You will be able to search the whole PubMed database for articles on your own topic within the broad area of Residential Aged Care, using the general RAC search filter.

Search for your own topic within RAC
Let's use the example of 'sleep' in the broad general RAC context. Results will include references that are about sleep in all of residential aged care (they will not be restricted to the palliative care context).
Instructions
Step 1: Click on this link: Run the RAC filter in PubMed now
Step 2: Click on Advanced, below the search box
Step 3: Type your topic search, ie, sleep, into the top Builder box (click on edit first) and select Search
Step 4: Click on the Advanced search link again
Step 5: Identify the 'set numbers' for Steps 1 and 3 above (eg, #1 AND #2)
Step 6: Click on the word Add next to each search to enter them in the PubMed search boxes; they will be automatically combined with AND
Step 7: Select Search
You can substitute your own search terms in Step 3 to create your own PubMed Search.
Search for your own topic within Palliative Care in RAC

If so, use the instructions below to search for your topic restricted to palliative care and residential aged care, using the palliative care and RAC filters combined. Again we will use the example of 'sleep', this time in the palliative care in RAC context.
Instructions

Step 2: CLEAR the PubMed search box (by clicking on the cross)
Step 3: Enter your topic search, ie, sleep, and select Search
Step 4: Click on the Advanced search link
Step 5: Identify the searches in the list for Steps 1 and 3 above
Step 6: Click on the word Add next to each search to enter them in the PubMed search boxes; they will be automatically combined with AND
Step 7: Select Search
Results will include references that are about sleep in residential aged care, restricted to the palliative care context. Substitute your own search terms in Step 3 to create your own PubMed Search.
Having trouble?
Make sure that you type your search terms in the PubMed 'search' box, and not the palliAGED 'search' box. This mistake could happen if you forget to click on the ‘Run the RAC and palliative care filters combined in PubMed now' step in these instructions.
