In 2019, as part of the federal National Palliative Care Project scheme, IMPACCT was granted $1.2 million in funding to conduct a gap analysis and design a new model of care for palliative care in Australian correctional facilities.
This project will contribute to the Government’s ‘Public Health and Chronic Disease Program: National Palliative Care’ program by improving access to high quality palliative care and end-of-life care for people in prisons. Similar to international trends, Australian correctional/justice health services increasingly need to provide palliative and end-of-life care to people in prisons.
The project team have engaged correctional/justice health services from all Australian States and Territories, in addition to clinicians and experts to form a National Consortia to guide the project. The Consortia will address this gap by co-designing a new national framework of palliative care for Australian prisons; inclusive of national policies, workforce capacity building strategies, clinical service model of care and a toolkit of resources, for ongoing use. These initiatives will enable correctional/justice health services clinicians to provide the best possible care to people with palliative needs who are in prison.
