The Australian Family Carer Toolkit Project aims to develop is a website containing high quality information and resources to help people who support a person with a serious illness or advanced disease. The focus is on people with diseases which may not be cured and are potentially life-threatening such as advanced cancer, dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, respiratory disease, motor neurone disease, ALS, kidney disease, and liver disease.
The Carer Toolkit will provide information and resources on:
- ‘How to’ care for someone with an advanced disease including practical care tasks, managing medications and negotiating the health care system
- Self-care strategies for carers
- The location of care: Hospital, hospice, home or aged care
- Palliative care
- Coping with emotions and difficult conversations
- Changing roles and changing relationships as the disease progresses
- Videos of carers talking about their experiences caring for someone with an advanced disease
- Legal and financial issues
- Care as death approaches
- Death and dying
- Grief and bereavement
- Links to other online resources, websites and relevant health services

Who is involved in the project?
The Centre for Palliative Care (St. Vincent’s Hospital and a Collaborative Centre of the University of Melbourne, Australia) is leading the project and partnering with CareSearch (Flinders University), The University of Technology (Sydney), and Carers’ Australia who bring their expertise in education and information technology, evaluation, and advocacy for the carer community.
The project has been funded by the Australian Government Department of Health for a three year period from July 2017-June 2020.
